Manhattan Boogie Woogie

Manhattan Boogie Woogie is a limited edition silkscreen print by ‘Godfather of pop art’, Sir Peter Blake. The piece was created for the cover for the 1982 album of the same name by English synth-pop band Landscape.

Blake’s artwork is inspired by visual cultures of the 1930s and 40s: the period in which boogie-woogie music was at the peak of its popularity. Blake has included Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondrian’s ‘Broadway Boogie Woogie’ (1943) in the top left corner, as well as references to the work of Matisse, and the inclusion of cultural icons such as Jimmy Stewart, Louis Armstrong. The band members from Landscape appear at centre bottom, beneath the letters U2XME1X2MUCH which stand for a later EP release titled ‘You two-timed me one time too much’. With its combination of colourful blocks, photographic imagery, fragments of text, and art-world references, Manhattan Boogie Woogie is collage art at its most innovative, from one of the original pioneers of the craft.

From a limited edition of 250, hand signed and numbered by Blake himself, Manhattan Boogie Woogie is an unmissable work of contemporary fine art print making.

    About the artist

Heralded as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art’, Sir Peter Blake was knighted in 2002 for his invaluable contribution to contemporary art.

Blake began his career creating collages from photographs, cigarette packets and matchboxes. This new approach to the creation of visual art – taking found imagery from Pop culture – was spearheaded in Britain by Blake and continues to inspire contemporary artists today.

Best known for creating the iconic cover to the Beatles’ 1967 album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, Blake continues to produce work that draws extensively on elements from popular cultures around the world.
