Leading maverick of the contemporary artworld, Damien Hirst is the foremost among Young British Artists (YBAs) to come out of Goldsmiths in the late 1980s. Hirst rose to stardom by making objects that shocked and appalled by challenging conceptual depth in both profound and prankish ways. Regarded as Britain’s most notorious living artist, Hirst has studded human skulls in diamonds and submerged sharks, sheep and other dead animals in formaldehyde. Hirst remains genre-defying and creates everything from sculpture, prints, works on paper and paintings to installation and objects. From Pills, pill cabinets and pharmaceuticals to rare gems and dots all have been running themes for Hirst.
In Gold Tears, a giclee with UV varnish and foil block. A limited signed edition of 55, this stunning print presents an interior of a golden cabinet with a variety of white and yellow diamonds displayed across the shelves.
The elaborate presentation and the alluded wealth combine to create an indulgent showcase that when compared to the wider body of Hirst’s display cabinets, where he gives equal status to pills and used cigarette butts, the diamonds take on another meaning. Or maybe they don’t.

About the artist
British art phenomenon Damien Hirst shot to fame after winning the Turner Prize in 1995. One of the YBAs (Young British Artists), who dominated the UK art scene during the 1990s, Hirst has always been contentious, impressing and shocking the art world in equal measure with his provocative approach.
His varied work explores the complex threads of relation between art, religion, science, life and death. Hirst works across diverse media, creating sculpture, installation, painting and prints. From diamond encrusted skulls to giant pills, colourful spot paintings to the life-and-death of butterflies, Hirst’s work might divide opinion, but one thing remains a constant: every piece is unforgettable.
In his own words: “Great art or good art, is when you look at it, experience it and it stays in your mind. I don’t think conceptual art and traditional art are all that different.”
