Parklife III

London-based artist, Gavin Mitchell reworks found objects, using photography, collage and print, to explore the relationship between East and West. His work uses photographs taken of Japanese Geishas captured by early 20th century photographers, and juxtaposes their traditional daily activities with more modern options, including board games, Playboy magazine and toys.

When discussing his inspiration, Mitchell comments: “The human and material landscape is where I draw my inspiration. Captured through my lens or found through digging deep, the environment I live in and the world I travel through.”

In Parklife III Mitchell adorns traditional photographs with contradictory imagery, to play with our perceptions of the Geisha lifestyle and to highlight the differences and similarities between Japanese and European culture. In this piece, Mitchell has manipulated the black and white photography, adding flashes of colour. Three Geishas are out for the day, but their usual clogs have been replaced by roller skates, and they’ve bought a Boom Box along for the ride.

This pigment print is hand-varnished and finished with gold and metal leaf. It is from a limited edition of 50, signed and numbered by the artist.

    About the artist
    +

According to contemporary artist Gavin Mitchell, the phrase that best describes his work is ‘mixed up’. From his inspirations to his processes to his use of materials, all the way to the finished product, Mitchell’s aesthetic is determined by an idea of disorder and deconstruction, pulling apart the ordinary to put it back together in extraordinary ways.

Inspired by early experimental collage artist Hannah Höch, Mitchell’s work is about a “journey of discovery” in which all “preconceptions” must be abandoned. The result is a body of work that speaks its own, unique visual language, built through layer upon layer of imagery, to create highly original and provocative works of art.
