Cherry Blossoms in Bloom. Kaikai Kiki

Takashi Murakami is an acclaimed artist heralded as 'Japan’s answer to Andy Warhol.' Best known for his smiley flowers, his ‘superflat’ theory of art combines Japan’s love for cuteness with its traditional artistic styles and aesthetics.

This piece was created by Murakami and Kaikai Kiki - the artist collective he founded in 2001, which when translated means, ‘powerful and sensitive’. The title refers to both the working relationships within the collective and Murakami’s passion for exploring the dichotomy of Japanese culture, and how joy and suffering go hand-in-hand.
