David Shrigley has fun with it. He’s best known for his cartoonish childlike style, often engaging with darkly comic observations about adult life. Featuring scribbles, uneven type, odd and sometimes nonsensical messages, there’s an addictive unhinged joy in his work. He celebrates the mundanity of the everyday, focusing on creating something refreshingly relatable.
Shrigley has a point of view and isn’t afraid to convey it with conviction. He explains, “It’s not the kind of drawing where you’re trying to get their eyes in the right place, you’re just trying to tell somebody something as directly as possible.” His work laughs at life with a fearlessness disguised in humour; a style that has been recognised around the world.
Whether it is album art for musicians such as Franz Ferdinand and David Bryne or being nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize, Shrigley’s work is consistently in demand. Far from settled, he continues to explore his creativity with animation and most recently, filmmaking. We’re excited to see what oddity pops out of his mind next.
