According to contemporary artist Gavin Mitchell, the phrase that best describes his work is ‘mixed up’. From his inspirations to his processes to his use of materials, all the way to the finished product, Mitchell’s aesthetic is determined by an idea of disorder and deconstruction, pulling apart the ordinary to put it back together in extraordinary ways.
Inspired by early experimental collage artist Hannah Höch, Mitchell’s work is about a “journey of discovery” in which all “preconceptions” must be abandoned. The result is a body of work that speaks its own, unique visual language, built through layer upon layer of imagery, to create highly original and provocative works of art.
