Freddie Mercury

Mike Edwards marries word and image to produce a unique form of celebrity portraiture. Using song lyrics, memorable quotes, or his own, poetic compositions, Edwards layers text in graduating colours to create images of great icons.
His portrait of Freddie Mercury depicts the Queen frontman during his unforgettable Live Aid performance in 1985. White vest, microphone in hand, Freddie is composed from his own lyrics, carefully arranged into a loose chronology. At the top, Bohemian Rhapsody’s opening line, ‘is this the real life’, gives way to lyrics from across Queen’s oeuvre, concluding with the tragic sentiment, ‘who wants to live forever?’.
A bright and poignant tribute to one of the twentieth century’s most enduring musical icons.
