In our Brighton gallery we’ve recently received in a trio of new prints by the anonymous artist Lead Belly. The print ‘Maude’ depicts the image of a stylish 1950s era woman, resplendent in an elegant outfit of pencil skirt, jacket and smart hat.

The woman could easily have been featured in fashion editorials of the post-war era, if it were not for the semi-automatic machine gun, which she casually holds as if it were a handbag. As in all of the Lead Belly work we’ve received so far there is a strong juxtaposition in the imagery as themes and ideas combine.

Lead Belly is a new artist on the scene who “in an age of celebrity worship and shameless self-promotion has decided to remain anonymous, allowing their artwork to exist independently from their own identity”.

Their previous print ‘My Boy Isaac’, which depicts two boxers in the midst of a ferocious dual has proven to be very popular in our Brighton gallery, with only one of the dazzling black glitter editions still available.

“I always work in series and these femme-fatales are a celebration of the understated and often overlooked power of women. Although I don’t advocate violence or approve of weapons, I decided to use the image of a gun as it so directly communicates notions of power, dominance and control.” – Lead Belly

At £175 for the black and white print or £250 for the coloured background gold/silver leaf versions these new prints present great value and would look striking framed up on any wall. We can’t wait to see more from this mysterious artist.
