On Thursday 27th October, Enter Gallery is delighted to be hosting the latest solo show from leading contemporary artist, Ryan Callanan AKA RYCA.
Boasting a huge and loyal international fanbase, RYCA is known for entertaining artworks that play with motifs from popular culture, be that music, film or sweary sayings that have made it into the modern vernacular.
Following the enormous success of his 2021 show at Enter Gallery, Little Smiling Dots, this is one of those Brighton art events that collectors and art lovers won’t want to miss. Playtime promises something new and exciting from the artist - his first ever painting series!
In today’s blog, we discuss Playtime and reveal a few exciting titbits about what you can expect from the showcase…
Game On
In Playtime, RYCA is taking us on a nostalgic trip down memory lane to the 1990s – when the Sega Master System reigned supreme.
The show will feature 10 original artworks created with oil paint and enamel on canvas. Each of the original paintings comes framed by RYCA in bespoke frames, designed to mimic vintage Sega packaging.
Start Game
RYCA’s new paintings combine Sega’s retro packaging design with references to various aspects of popular culture. In line with the rest of his oeuvre, RYCA has been inspired by his usual sources, namely - music, film and popular terminology.
Music has long been a source of inspiration for the artist, with pieces created over the years inspired by all his favourite genres, be that hip hop, acid house, or drum and bass. For his Playtime collection, RYCA draws inspiration from Drake, DJ Zinc and Ian Drury and the Blockheads.
Fast Forward
The collection also features nods to beloved classic movies, Jurassic Park and The Wizard of Oz.
And in a continuation of his popular artworks depicting widespread sayings, such as Sofuckinproud, RYCA has chosen to immortalise internet terminology, with amusing pieces created to portray, ‘Netflix and Chill’, ‘Cool story bro’ and ‘That’s Lit’.

At the Private View, RYCA will be giving away free gifts related to the show on a first-come-first-served basis. You won't want to miss these little treats so be sure to get to the Private View bang on 6pm.
