After Henry James, 2011
After Henry James is a signed limited edition inkjet print with embossing and silkscreen glaze by British contemporary artist Tom Phillips RA.
This work is based on Phillips' 2006 pastel We Work in the Dark, and incorporates a text from Henry James, the renowned 19th-century novelist:
“We work in the dark — we do what we can — we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.” — The Happening, 1893.
After Henry James underscores the connection between Phillips's art and literature, a theme that has been central throughout his career. Phillips, who translated and illustrated Dante’s Inferno, recently wrote the libretto for an opera based on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and his ongoing project A Humument draws inspiration from another 19th-century writer, W.H. Mallock.
Phillips is not only captivated by literature but also by the physical inclusion of text in his artworks. For him, lettering serves both to convey meaning and as an ornamental element. As Phillips states, "Ornament often goes hand in hand with script, both in the great illuminated pages of Christian manuscripts and the masterpieces of Arabic art." The outer frame of After Henry James features an abstract color pattern, a motif Phillips has explored in his Quantum Poetics panels.
