Antonia Hazlewood Biography

Antonia Hazlewood

Antonia Hazlewood’s bold, vibrant, and experimental practice is multi-faceted - spanning paintings that explore the intrinsic forces of nature to performances that dissolve the boundary between body and artwork. Movement becomes mark, mark becomes trace, and drawing becomes a choreography of becoming.

In painting, her dynamic and intuitive process is an inquiry into the rhizomatic threads of connection that humans share with nature. The outcome resists the illusion of understanding, favouring suggestion instead. Her practice begins with drawing natural forms that unfurl onto the page, which she rotates as she works, allowing each composition to evolve without a fixed orientation. Her works exist in a continual state of becoming, acting as portals into transformation that invite viewers to open their minds and shift their perspective.

In an attempt to capture the rhythm of flux and the unfurling of time and space, the canvas journeys into the unknown. Every action is evolution, adaptation, and absorption; layers of change amalgamate upon one surface in a kind of chemical fusion. Like a rhizome root, if you look closely, you will notice a labyrinth of interconnection – and with it, a story.

Recent highlights include exhibiting at Turner Contemporary, the acquisition of four works by The Artist Residence for their permanent collection, and commissions from Faithless and Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. This year, she participated in Brighton’s Open House Festival and exhibited in London in a show curated by renowned art critic and writer Anthony Fawcett. Following her 2023 graduation, she was nominated for the CVAN South East Platform Graduate Award and received the University for the Creative Arts Graduate Award, which culminated in a month-long residency and her debut solo show.
