Joy

Joy is a giclée print by contemporary collage artist Maria Rivans.

The piece was first released in 2019 and is finished with diamond dust and high gloss spot varnish. Joy depicts 1950s British actress Jean Simmons. Rivans has collaged one of her signature, pin-up headdress around Simmons’ black and white portrait: an exuberant collection of flowers and foliage, birds, bumblebees, and vibrant vintage ephemera. Joy is a celebration of travel, the natural world, and life’s little pleasures. Turning her head towards the viewer, over her shoulder-less dress made from feathers and daisies, Simmons-as-Joy radiates the bygone glamour of Hollywood, tinged with twenty-first century flare.

Known for her unique mash-up of styles, and her love of vintage film and television, Maria Rivans a leading name in contemporary British collage and printmaking and her prints and originals are sought-after collectables. From a limited edition of 60, signed and numbered by the artist, Joy is a must-have for the lover of contemporary fine-art prints.

    About the artist
    +

Taking a unique approach to collaging, Maria Rivans is known for her layered imagery of vintage Hollywood. From starlets to Sci-Fi, B-movies to TV trash, Rivans’ passion for bygone cinema is palpable, infusing every piece with a life of its own.

Merging Pop Art with Surrealism, her work overflows with elements – a rich fusion of the organic and artificial, the urban and the natural, the human and the animal. Finely tuned to colour and compositional harmony, Rivans uses her distinctive approach to vintage adding a touch of humour, optimism, and inspiration.

In 2017 and 2018, her work featured in The Times newspaper and, in 2018, her Film Still ‘Understanding Nothing’ was selected for the Royal Academy’s 250th Summer Exhibition.
