Agave Americana
A leading figure in the development of 1960s Conceptual Art, Bruce McLean is regarded as one of the major players in contemporary British art. Rebellious and pioneering, McLean loosened traditional forms into abstraction and paved the way for pop art aesthetics.
For Agave Americana think Matisse meets Mondrian meets Motherwell: an intrepid blend of decorative arts, formalism, and abstraction. In this busy screen print, blocks of bright colour sit beside striated panels of monochrome, textured strokes of grey pigment and stylistic images of flora, from agave fronds to leafless trees to branches of olives. From one of the pioneers of British abstract art, Agave Americana is an exemplar in compositional experimentalism.
