Charlotte Rose is one of the UK’s most exciting emerging artists. Since her first solo show, I Quit Last Week in 2021, Rose’s exploration of our relationship with stylish-yet-insidious 20th century cigarette branding has been making waves, and catching the attention of big names like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Yungblud and Bimini Bon Boulash.
Rose’s second solo show, Too Much of A Good Thing took place in London in 2022, and was curated by Enter Gallery. The show focused on nostalgic branding, while challenging its intention, with each piece designed as, ‘an exploration of the dream sold by ad companies in the name of selling poisonous goods.’
The Shakespeare Tobacco Company, also curated by Enter Gallery, took place in October 2023. Her third show in as many years, the show was a graphic exploration of literature, addressing the same themes of mortality, desire and fate that so captivated William Shakespeare. In combining branding with imagery that evokes classics such as Macbeth and Hamlet, Rose compared Shakespearean tragedy with the conflicts that arise between cigarette company and loyal consumer.
