Found Art - Buttons, 2012

Found Art - Buttons, 2012 is a signed, original limited edition digital print by Sir Peter Blake. Printed at Coriander Studios, published by CCA Galleries.

Sir Peter Blake expands his found art series with works such as Winston, 24 Flags, Vera Puzzle, Playmates, and Beatles. The series is rooted in one of the earliest tenets of Pop Art: that everyday objects can become the subject matter for fine art. However, unlike Warhol’s focus on dominant commercial brands, Blake’s interest lies in “found art” – objects most people might consider valueless, such as old cigarette packets, packaging from children’s games, matchboxes, and other ephemera. This fascination with arcane and unusual objects is central to his collecting instinct; his studio is often described as being closer to a museum of popular culture and printed ephemera than a typical artist’s workspace.

Blake invites us to see these objects in a new way – as art. His interest in outsider and commercial art has always been integral to his work. By enlarging these objects, we can appreciate the beauty of their design, their fragility, and their textural quality. To achieve this level of detail, Blake employs the latest digital technology, allowing him to enlarge an object up to 50 times its normal size. This magnification reveals details invisible to the naked eye, from frayed fibers to subtle surface features. As Blake explains, “There are literally millions of things that, if you can scan them and make them 50 times bigger, they’re beautiful because of the technology. You are touching the object, so the scanner is seeing things that the human eye can’t see. The bigger you take it, the clearer it becomes. It’s almost infinite.”

About the artist
+

Heralded as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art’, Sir Peter Blake was knighted in 2002 for his invaluable contribution to contemporary art.

Blake began his career creating collages from photographs, cigarette packets and matchboxes. This new approach to the creation of visual art – taking found imagery from Pop culture – was spearheaded in Britain by Blake and continues to inspire contemporary artists today.

Best known for creating the iconic cover to the Beatles’ 1967 album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, Blake continues to produce work that draws extensively on elements from popular cultures around the world.
