Yayoi Kusama

 Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, she had her first solo show in 1952. By the mid-60’s she was in New York, establishing herself as an important avant-garde artist through happenings, events and exhibitions. Her art transcended two important movements of that time; Pop Art and Minimalism. Her career grew as she exhibited internationally at high profile galleries and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Tate Modern, The Centre for International Contemporary Arts, New York, the National Gallery of Singapore and more.

Since childhood the artist art as a tool for healing; suffering with mental illness as a child the artist channelled her hallucinations and personal obsessions into a prolific artist output. Her conceptual art is autobiographical with psychological and sexual content. It also shows attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism pop art and abstract expressionism.

Over her career she has created paintings, installations, sculptures, literary works, performances, fashion, architectural structures, films and design.

Today, Yayoi Kusama is recognised and one of the worlds most famous artists, contemporary and utterly unique.
