Crack is Wack
Mark Powell creates intricate hand-drawn portraits on antique documentation using just a standard Bic Biro.
Here, using a vintage deck of cards, Powell depicts Keith Haring – the legendary pop artist who rose to prominence during the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s, alongside Basquiat and Holzer.
Though outwardly cheerful, Haring’s colourful and animated artworks didn’t shy away from challenging subjects. Crack is Wack is one of the most famous examples, created to highlight the crack cocaine epidemic and its impact on New York City.
This seven-colour silkscreen print is from a limited edition of 100, signed and numbered by the artist. The piece uses custom ink to replicate the biro, giving a beautiful glossy finish.
