To celebrate Playtime - RYCA’s upcoming solo show at Enter Gallery on October 27th 2022, this month we’re giving you the chance to win Ban-E-Land – a limited edition print created by one of the UK’s leading contemporary artists, RYCA aka Ryan Callanan.

Ban E Land depicts a ten pound note, doctored to replace Queen Elizabeth II’s face with that of an acid smiley – a symbol of rave culture.

With money across the world soon to change to reflect King Charles III’s ascension to the throne, this competition gives you the chance to start your art collection with a print that commemorates this important moment in history.

Here’s everything you need to know about Ban-E-Land and how you can be in it to win it…

Royal Inspiration

Ban-E-Land is RYCA’s play on Banksy’s infamous 2004 Di-Faced Tenner. In a much-publicised stunt, the mysterious street artist printed £1 million worth of ten pound notes with Princess Diana’s face in place of The Queen’s. The notes were issued by the ‘Banksy of England’ and also featured Charles Darwin on the reverse and a strict instruction to ‘Trust no one’.

Banksy released these doctored bills into crowds at Reading Festival and Notting Hill Carnival, and unleashed a briefcase full of the bills at Liverpool Street Station during rush hour, sparking mayhem. One of the original notes is now on display in The British Museum.

A celebration of Rave culture

RYCA is a leading contemporary artist known for entertaining artworks that play with motifs from popular culture, be that musicfilm or sweary sayings that have made it into the modern vernacular.

Ban-E-Land
includes multiple nods to rave culture, including a reference to 1988 – a year dubbed ‘the second summer of love’ after acid house swept the nation and changed youth culture forever.

The acid smiley is a motif seen across RYCA’s oeuvre, and its presence in an artwork immediately marks it out as a piece by this coveted artist.

Ban-E-Land is a limited edition giclée print, hand-finished, signed and numbered by the artist.
