Not only must they depict a likeness, but they must also capture the very essence of their subject, conveying their story, or an emotion through one single image.

Join us on the evening of Thursday 12th September, for a portrait masterclass with esteemed photographer, Jessica van der Weert. As well as being Fatboy Slim’s official photographer for more than a decade, van der Weert has captured striking portraits of some of the biggest names in the music industry, from Boy George and Goldie to Annie Mac and DJ Carl Cox.

Meet Jessica
Since she first picked up a camera at the age of eight, Jessica van der Weert has been hooked on taking portraits. While her successful photography career has covered everything from travel photography to advertising and high fashion, it is portraiture to which she always returns.
Jessica’s portrait photography has appeared on the covers of Vogue and i-D Magazine, and since 2014, she has been capturing portraits of Fatboy Slim that are used internationally to promote his gigs and appearances.
“What I love about portraiture is not even the actual picture, it’s the people that I find the most interesting. Making connections is the most natural thing we do. My whole approach is based on making the people I’m photographing comfortable and finding that connection, because that connection is what comes across in the photograph.” - Jessica van der Weert
Structure of Workshop
In this two hour Portrait Masterclass, van der Weert will introduce you to her work, and will talk participants through the qualities that make a great portrait.
Next, van der Weert will set an exercise, giving everyone time to get creative, and to apply her tips to capture a portrait photograph of their own.
Finally, everyone will share their work, with van der Weert offering feedback and constructive criticism about how to make your attempts even better. You’ll also get the opportunity to ask van der Weert questions about her career and her approach to each artwork she creates.
