This week, ravers old and new are reuniting on Brighton’s pebbles to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fatboy Slim’s infamous Big Beach Boutique.
As a frequent collaborator with the legendary DJ, it was no surprise that RYCA wanted to create something special to commemorate one of the biggest cultural events in dance music history.
Acid Box is a box set featuring six reimaginations of the acid smiley. It is available now, exclusively at Enter Gallery.
In today’s blog, we discuss RYCA’s past collaborations with Fatboy Slim, and reveal a little more about Acid Box, including details of an exciting addition one lucky buyer will find hidden within.
A match made in (dance) heaven
Whether he’s taking us back to the days of acid house, depicting the age-old rave symbol – the acid man, or paying homage to the bassline, RYCA’s love of dance music is plain to see.
It’s little wonder then that the artist and the man who coined the mantra, ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat’, have come a long, long way together, collaborating on multiple artworks, from his sold-out Right Here, Right Now print (pictured), to their 2013 Acid Drop.
The stunt saw the duo paste over 100 unique pieces of smiley art around East London overnight – encouraging fans to hunt them down and take them home.
Killer smile
For Acid Box, RYCA is celebrating rave culture via six different takes on the acid smiley.
Hardcore fans will see that a number of the pieces are reminiscent of some of RYCA’s earlier works, including his Love and Happy Beams, 2022, powerpills, and Ban E Land, making the boxset perfect for anyone looking to own artworks that define his oeuvre.
To add a dab of something special, two pieces in each set will be entirely unique. Each of the drippy smile prints will have a unique mono printed background, and each Acidquiat portrait will be hand-finished by RYCA.
But that’s not the only party favour. One box set out of the limited edition of 50 will have RYCA’s original sketched plan for the box set contained within. This hand-drawn sketch shows how the set began life, and gives a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s creative process.
