This weekend, Enter Gallery threw a party to celebrate the launch of Carl by Brighton based photographic artist, Mark Vessey.

Carl is the latest addition to Vessey’s internationally-regarded Collections series, in which he brings together the vinyl that defines entire genres of music, and more recently, that captures the record collections of musical icons.

In Carl, Vessey presents us with the ‘absolute superstar’ records of DJ Carl Cox – the multi-award winning pioneer of the British rave scene who’s been delighting dancefloors around the world for an impressive four decades.

On Saturday, we were thrilled to welcome the legendary DJ to Enter Gallery to launch this new artwork. In today’s blog, we’re providing some snaps of the night, so you can relive the magic or see what you missed.

The Three Deck Wizard

On Saturday, Enter Gallery was packed to the rafters with fans of Vessey and Cox, there to snap up the artwork, and to rub shoulders with the artist and the DJ.

Cox happily chatted away to guests, some of whom had travelled many hundreds of miles on the off chance that the DJ would make a surprise appearance. Fortunately, they weren’t disappointed!

On the evening, Cox and Vessey made time to chat to the BBC, who came along to interview the pair to discover more about their collaboration and the personal stories behind each of Cox’s chosen records.
 

Remarkably, Vessey helped Cox to narrow down his 150,000 strong record collection to just the 102 records that feature. The artwork spans each of Cox’s eclectic musical influences, including everything from soul, rare groove and hip hop, to Detroit techno and 80s pop. You can watch the BBC interview below.
