The artist’s small format gold portraits are causing quite a stir in our Brighton gallery.
Newly in at our Brighton gallery are a number of eye-catching works from photographer and image manipulator Andrew Millar. Based in East London, Millar until recently only produced work using his trusty, vintage Polaroid SX-70 camera. The artist utilises somewhat retro equipment and techniques, embracing the element of chance and experimentation that shooting on analogue film offers.

The photographic film Millar uses has a significant impact on the finished image. By using instant film, he can manipulate the emulsion while the image is developing, separating the image emulsion from the film base, creating multiple exposures, overlaying the image transparencies and altering the temperature or developing time.
This methodology results in surreal, dreamlike and ethereal images, that when contrasted with black and gold result in stunning prints which are reproduced as silkscreen editions and are gilded and hand finished.
If you are interested in the work of Andrew Millar we strongly suggest dropping by the Brighton gallery, so you can appreciate the seductive qualities of his work in person. In the meantime, you can view his work available online here.
