Back to Black (Diamond Dust), 2013

Back to Black (Diamond Dust) is a signed limited edition silkscreen with black glitter and diamond dust by Joe Webb. Printed at Coriander Studio and published by CCA Galleries. This artwork is also available in a gloss version.

Back to Black celebrates the beauty of the female form with nothing to distract from it. Webb’s image epitomizes understated elegance and glamour, with the simplicity of a female figure set against a black background. The delicate sparkle of diamond dust on her jewels adds an extra layer of refinement. By excluding most of the face, the figure becomes anonymous, shifting the focus entirely to the shape and form of the body. When examined objectively, the body parts appear to float in space, taking on an almost abstract quality.

"Back to Black is taken from a series of new collages I’ve recently made. There’s a continuous unbroken line throughout the body parts... it’s my most minimal work yet, with only the flesh of the subject left, producing an almost abstract shape. These were inspired in part by Henri Matisse’s ‘Blue Nude’ cutouts. I love Matisse’s idea of ‘painting with scissors’ and how his work became minimal and concise in his later years. I enjoy referencing other artists’ works and then taking them somewhere else.” — Joe Webb

    About the artist
    +

Favouring the hand-made over the high-tech, Joe Webb goes back to tactility in the creation of his retro collages. Sourcing vintage magazines from second-hand stores, Webb reworks original imagery, using simple and concise edits to build new visual narratives.

Surreal and sentimental, his work explores profoundly human themes of love, longing, war and inequality. With a penchant for the 1960s Space Age, much of Webb’s work depicts expansive galactic vistas, subtly subverted to invite the viewer to question their place in the universe. Environmentally conscious, Webb’s work is more than just a visual tour-de-force: this is art with something to say.
