Richard Tuff Biography

Richard Tuff

Richard Tuff is an accomplished British painter and printmaker, celebrated for his vibrant depictions of the Cornish landscape. Originally from Manchester, he studied at Winchester School of Art before relocating to Cornwall in 1988—a move that marked the beginning of his full-time artistic career.

Tuff’s work is known for its distinctive blend of painterly boldness and quiet sophistication. His paintings often appear deceptively simple, yet they reveal a mastery of light, colour, and composition. With a keen eye for tonal balance and abstract form, his landscapes go beyond traditional representation, capturing not only the visual elements of a scene but also its mood and atmosphere.

He frequently paints the harbours, towns, and coastlines of Cornwall, evoking the character and charm of the West Country with a palette of harmonious hues. His works reflect a deep connection to place, drawing the viewer into a world of tranquillity and subtle transformation.

In addition to painting, Tuff is an accomplished printmaker, having successfully adapted his signature gouache technique to create richly layered silkscreen prints. These works, like his paintings, have gained a devoted following, with demand often exceeding supply.

While earlier travels to Morocco and Brazil once influenced his use of colour and light, it is Cornwall that remains his most enduring source of inspiration. Its dramatic contrasts, serene waterways, and changing skies continue to inform his artistic vision—and remain, unmistakably, at the heart of his work and life.
