Bitter Lamentations

Marcelina Amelia is a contemporary artist known for her works that explore themes of self-acceptance, gender and representations of female sexuality. Both humorous and tinged with darkness, her work plays with juxtapositions.

In this emotional piece, Amelia depicts her subject on her knees and looking to the heavens. Speaking of the work, she explains:

“When I’m painting, I’m sharply connected to my subconscious and often don’t realise the emotional impact of creating the work. While painting this piece, one of my arms stopped working. My body often does this, reacting in strange ways every time I get very close to my most vulnerable chords.”

This silkscreen print is created with archival inks and acrylic. It comes with hand-deckled edges and signed and numbered by the artist. A certificate of authenticity is available on request.

    About the artist
    +

Contemporary artist Marcelina Amelia draws inspiration from her Polish heritage, looking to traditions of folklore and religious iconography to develop a distinctive contemporary aesthetic. Blending childhood nostalgia with the power of dream, Amelia’s work takes a surreal look at the human condition, exploring the tensions and juxtapositions that define our lives. She explains: “I like to play at the tense borders between lust and innocence; joy and sadness; fun and pain. My interest in juxtaposition comes from my origins and fascination with East European culture.”

In 2018, Rebecca Wilson, chief curator at Saatchi Art, highlighted Amelia as an artist to invest in, while Saatchi curator Monty Preston recognised her as “unquestionably an artist on the rise.”

She has been featured in publications including Booooooom, Digital Arts, Art Wednesday, Vogue and Ballad Of Magazine. She exhibited at D&AD, New Designers, London Design Festival, London Illustration Fair, and took part in Faberge’s Big Egg Hunt.
