Drowning Girl, 1963, Skateboard
American artist, Roy Lichtenstein, was an icon of the Pop Art movement. His distinctive comic-book style and exploration of consumerism and modern culture have cemented him as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
Throughout his career, Lichtenstein frequently represented the classic archetypal beauties found in comic books and everyday advertising.
Drowning Girl is the artist’s reinterpretation of a Tony Abruzzo comic from the 1960s. Across a triptych of three skateboards, the artwork depicts a distressed woman emerging tearfully from heavy waves. She claims in a comic-style speech bubble typical of Lichtenstein’s work that she’d rather drown than call ‘Brad’ for help.
