XXX, inspired by a painting of the same name first shown in the artist's 2019 solo exhibition at White Cube, Hong Kong, is designed like a novel cover. The top features a vibrant mix of letters and colors, balanced by a neutral band at the bottom with the title and artist's name. Drips at the canvas edge reveal underlying color layers. Part of an ongoing series, Miller uses short, punchy words in bold hues, drawing influence from artists like Rauschenberg and Ruscha, and employing techniques that abstract and deconstruct language. Combining Pop sensibilities with the sacred tradition of illuminated manuscripts, Miller merges the spiritual with the everyday.
The letter X holds personal and cultural significance for Miller, tied to punk and X-rated cinema. The layered XXX letters suggest motion, with overlapping, kaleidoscopic forms that appear translucent, like a series of overlapping slides.
