The Gay Shepherd
The Gay Shepherd is an original ceramic piece by Haus of Lucy.
To create her ceramics, Lucy takes found figurines and adds unexpected modern details made from polymer clay and ceramic paint. These funny flourishes give her chintzy characters a new lease of life that's guaranteed to make you chuckle.
Here, Lucy recounts the story of The Gay Shepherd:
Samuel was the happiest shepherd for miles, earning him the well-deserved nickname 'The Gay Shepherd'. Every day he rose with the cock(erel), slipped on his glittery suit and headed out to tend his sheep, all the while yodelling at the top of his voice. There was just one thing missing, and that was someone to share his bread, and his bed.
Each day Samuel would scroll Grindr looking for love but to no avail, he just kept coming up with the same 75-year-old bear in the next village, and there was every chance they were related.
And then one day, as he was yodelling the new Beyoncé track, Sam heard an echo. He persisted, and it happened again. The echo grew louder and before he knew it, the most handsome man he'd ever seen came striding over the brow of the hill. It turned out that 'Peter' was the new goatherd and was very lonely (he was on an exchange from Germany), so when he'd heard Sam's yodel he knew he'd found a kindred spirit and hiked straight over. The two immediately fell in love, combined their herds and lived happily ever after. The end.
To create this signed original artwork, Haus of Lucy has adapted a vintage china ornament with acrylic paint, ceramic paint and glitter.

About the artist
Contemporary artist and graphic designer Haus of Lucy, AKA Lucy Bryant merges classical fine art with satirical elements from contemporary culture for a wry and caustic aesthetic. Working across collage, print and sculpture, Haus Of Lucy’s work is a modern-day take on the Dadaist practice of objet trouvé. Taking ‘found’ original artworks, Haus Of Lucy adds unexpected details: an EasyJet Plane soaring above a pastoral idyll or a hot dog in the hand of a porcelain figurine.
Influenced by Pop Art and Punk, Lucy's rebellious approach to classicism is tongue-in-cheek, asking the viewer to question contemporary culture.
In 2023, Enter Gallery hosted Lucy's debut solo show, Ghost Town, which explored the death of the high street and its knock-on effect on our sense of connection and community.
