Homage to Rauschenberg III

This piece is from a series of five silkscreen prints that Sir Peter Blake created in tribute to Robert Rauschenberg an American painter and graphic artist whose early work inspired the Pop Art movement.

Blake cites Rauschenberg as one of his earliest influences, and stated, 'My 'Rauschenbergs' are a very formalised version of his work. I made no attempt to assimilate his beautiful, almost 'Abstract Expressionistic' use of paint.'

In Homage to Rauschenberg III, Blake uses bright blocks of colour to accentuate his found items, which include a car number plate, rulers, a puzzle and a rusty old can of lager.

The print is part of a limited edition of 125, signed by the artist.

    About the artist
    +

Heralded as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art’, Sir Peter Blake was knighted in 2002 for his invaluable contribution to contemporary art.

Blake began his career creating collages from photographs, cigarette packets and matchboxes. This new approach to the creation of visual art – taking found imagery from Pop culture – was spearheaded in Britain by Blake and continues to inspire contemporary artists today.

Best known for creating the iconic cover to the Beatles’ 1967 album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, Blake continues to produce work that draws extensively on elements from popular cultures around the world.

To honour an incredible career (and to celebrate Blake's 92nd Birthday) Enter Gallery Presents: Peter Blake - A Print Retrospective - Our most extensive show to date of Blake's work, spanning all the disciplines for which he is best known, including collage, typography, found art and more.
