Maple Sizzurp Navy

Canadian urban artist, Whatisadam, is known worldwide for his Canadian-infused street art. Whether it’s boxing Mounties, murderous ice-hockey players or, in this instance – potentially toxic cans of maple ‘sizzurp’, the artist’s affection for his home is always clear to see.

This piece is a firm nod to his Pop Art predecessors, with the tinned goods immediately summoning Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup pieces. Upon closer examination you’ll see additional nods to Canada, including a plaid shirt, lacrosse sticks and a snowy scene, in homage to the cold weather that has earned Canada its nickname – The Great White North.

This silkscreen print is from a limited edition of 25, signed by the artist.

    About the artist
    +

Whatisadam, or WIA as he is also known, is one of Canada’s best-known urban artists. His stencils and murals can be found across Canada, and around the world, but it’s his hometown of Montreal where it’s difficult to walk anywhere without seeing a piece of his art.

Whatisadam’s Pop Art inclinations are inspired by the likes of Lichtenstein and Warhol. Across his murals and studio practices, which include silkscreen prints and installation work, his love for vintage comics is clear to see.

Much of his work is inspired by popular urban culture in North America. Whether it’s his tattooed ducks, hockey hooligans or cans of maple ‘sizzurp’, no one is forgetting that this guy is from Canada any time soon.
