Monkey In The Middle

Monkey in the Middle is a giclee print by contemporary artist Magnus Gjoen.

A gorgeous cluster of flowers covers the print. The style is baroque, the surface of the print distressed and aged to look like a work from antiquity. At the middle of the floral display sits a little monkey with a grimace on his face and a cartoon boxing glove covering his clenched paw. Dark and beautiful, Monkey in the Middle captures the mastery of baroque painting, with a subtle pop art twist.

Gjoen is known for his blend of antique and contemporary, creating an urban style that defies classification. A former shoe designer for Vivienne Westwood, Gjoen’s prints are dripping with style. Elegant yet quirky, Gjoen’s work is one of a kind.

His limited edition prints are sell-out successes: these are collectables in the making. Monkey in the Middle is from a small edition of just 50, each one hand signed and numbered by the artist, for an utterly desirable work of contemporary printmaking.

    About the artist
    +

Formerly a shoe designer for Vivienne Westwood, Magnus Gjoen’s migration to the world of printmaking has been nothing short of spectacular: his highly stylised and effortlessly stylish prints have earned him a reputation as one of the contemporary art world’s most sought after rising stars.

Incorporating elements of renaissance, baroque, street and fine art, Gjoen’s work explores the juxtapositions between life and death, power and fragility, and beauty and destruction, for an aesthetic that is at once opulent and macabre. From human skulls to hand grenades, Gjoen drapes his subjects in sumptuous swathes of Baroque design, creating a dramatic style that demands attention: this is not for the faint of heart.
