About the artist
Michael Spencer Jones is one of the UKs most influential rock photographers, capturing album artwork for some of the biggest names in rock history, from Oasis to Leonard Cohen. Jones’ photographic style is inspired by surrealism, Pop Art and by the work of 20th century American photographers, Alfred Steiglitz, Edward Steichen and Paul Outerbridge.
Jones mastered his craft studying for a degree in photography and film and assisting accomplished advertising photographer, Stak. But it wasn’t until he graduated, made the move to Manchester and became involved in the ‘Madchester’ music scene that he shifted to rock photography. After shooting the likes of the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, Jones was introduced to Noel Gallagher, who had been impressed with his work with The Verve.
Jones went on to create iconic albums for Oasis, including Definitely Maybe, What’s The Story Morning Glory and Be Here Now. He has also captured intimate portraits of musical legends, including Tom Jones, U2, Kasabian and Robbie Williams.
