H10-3 Theodora, 2022
This piece is from Hirst’s 2022 collection, H-10 The Empresses, which consists of five giclée prints of intricate patterns crafted from red butterflies.
Each artwork in the collection is named after a historical empress who played an important role in history. In this piece, Hirst immortalises Byzantine Empress, Theodora.
Butterflies are a repeat motif seen across Hirst’s oeuvre. He uses them to symbolise growth, change, life and death, but also to comment on the unique individuality that underpins the human experience.
