Reclining Artist

Reminiscent of Édouard Manet’s ‘Olympia’, ‘Reclining artist’ is a limited edition of 58 etching in Perry’s unique aesthetic of clashing, saturated colours and flat, juvenile perspective.

A self portrait with added breasts belonging to his alter-ego, Clare, Perry reclines on the sofa with his cat, Kevin beside him. Surrounded by objects reflecting his life and work as an artist as well as other cultural references such as a book on architect Zara Hadid to a copy of Viz magazine.

Speaking about the piece Grayson says, “Reclining Artist is both an idealized fantasy and also the messy reality. It is perhaps me expressing my desire to be a sex object and also show off my cultural capital and boyish paraphernalia”.

About the artist
+

Winner of the 2003 Turner Prize, prolific contemporary artist Grayson Perry is known for his penchant for cross-dressing, his air of eccentricity, and his deviously brilliant ceramics, tapestries, paintings, etchings and limited edition prints.

Dissecting British prejudices, fashions, and foibles, Perry juxtaposes decorative clichés with depictions of brutality. Chintzy flowers adorn weapons of war – the lion lays down with the lamb – to distort classical forms of beauty and to challenge cultural norms.

Perry’s work is underpinned by a strong autobiographical element, as self-portraits of himself as alter-ego Claire, as well as depictions of his childhood teddy bear, Alan Measles, are repeated throughout his oeuvre, building a sense of personal and psychological continuity.
