Fallen Dreams, Originals

This series of original artworks has been created especially for The Mix – Enter Gallery’s 2024 group show of original artworks from a selection of our artists.

Richard Berner is a Brighton-based artist known for his ‘surrealist architecture', which involves creating artworks from a meticulously-hand-drawn cast of little figures, that he calls ‘Champs.'

Fallen Dreams is a series of 25 unique illustrations. Each artwork in the collection is a prime example of Berner’s eccentric and imaginative oeuvre, and a wonderful opportunity to own a piece by this rising star. Speaking of how this collection came to be, Berner reveals:

"While creating A Dream Within A Hundred Dreams, there were a number of squares which I loved individually but felt didn't fit within the larger image when I placed them all together. I added more to this collection along the way and they became my 'Fallen Dreams.'"

These original works are created using pen, ink, gouache and gold leaf on paper. They come signed by the artist.

    Your Framing Options at entergallery.com

Box framing is provided with all our online framing, creating a distance between the glass and your artwork, so no risk of ink transfer to the pane. it's the perfect, gallery grade choice for limited edition prints or original artworks.

Shadow float mounting is an option at our website, to give the appearance of an artwork floating within the frame. The mount – an archival foam core – creates depth too, by casting a shadow beneath the artwork. We highly recommend using a float mount when framing artwork with deckled (hand-torn) edges.

As always, all our materials are sustainable and archival to keep your artwork in mint condition and perfectly presented. Simply choose from our white or black float framing options, before adding to basket.

Glazing all our framing orders are shipped with glass. We take great care with packaging to protect your artwork.

Alternatively, for added piece of mind, we've the option of gallery grade cast acrylic, offering superb clarity and protection.

    About the artist
    +

Brighton-based artist, Richard Berner is an internationally collected illustrator and painter best known for his detailed pieces where a larger image is created from hundreds of signature hand-drawn figures or ‘champs’.

After studying Fine Art and Animation Berner has gone on to create a range of artworks from children's book illustrations, to limited edition screen prints, surreal portraits on canvas to large-scale wall murals. All in a variety of media from ink on paper to acrylics on wood and glass.

Drawing inspiration from a colourful array of cultural iconography – from Star Wars to Disney, British landmarks to cult celebrity – Berner creates works which bristle with imagination and eccentricity.

With his intricate, ink drawings as a base, Berner brings each work to life with the addition of hand-applied colour and texture, building up layers of paint drips and splatters, for a dynamic and unique aesthetic.

He describes the scenes in his artwork as ‘surreal architecture’ and cites the masters, Dali and MC Escher as his biggest inspirations. It is easy to see this influence in the dream-like scenes he creates which often depict a dystopian view of his hometown of Brighton.

In December 2023, Enter Gallery presented You Can Be Anything (*Or Nothing) - Berner's debut solo show in Brighton. The show explored the vulnerability of the artist, and art's uncanny ability to mean everything to one person and absolutely nothing to the next. Read all about the show here.
